Geysir Hot Spring Area

The Great Geysir in Iceland is one of the country’s most famous natural attractions and the very geyser that gave its name to similar hot springs around the world. Located in the Haukadalur geothermal valley in South Iceland, Geysir has been a source of fascination for centuries. Historical records show that it has been erupting for over 1,000 years, with water once shooting up to an impressive 70–80 meters.

Today, the Great Geysir itself is mostly dormant, but the geothermal area is still very much alive. Just a few meters away is Strokkur, the most active geyser in Iceland. Strokkur erupts every 5–10 minutes, sending boiling water and steam up to 30 meters into the air, offering visitors a spectacular and reliable show. Surrounding the geysers are steaming fumaroles, colorful hot springs, and bubbling mud pools, creating a truly otherworldly landscape.

Geysir is part of the famous Golden Circle route, making it easy to visit from Reykjavík. Together with Þingvellir National Park and Gullfoss waterfall, it forms one of Iceland’s most popular sightseeing circuits. Walking paths and viewing areas allow visitors to safely explore the geothermal field and experience the raw power of Iceland’s volcanic energy up close.

For anyone traveling to Iceland, a stop at Geysir is a must. It combines natural beauty, geological wonder, and cultural history, making it one of the most memorable highlights of the country.
